In August 1973, while serving as Math Lecturer at The University of Lagos, W.F. Kumuyi started a Bible study group with 15 university students who had come to him requesting training in the Scriptures. By the early 1980’s that small group had grown to several thousand, at which time Deeper Life Bible Church was formally established.
By 1988 the congregation had grown to 50,000, and now numbers over 1,000,000 members in Nigeria alone and thousands more around the world, making it the third largest Christian church in the world. Dr. Johan Combrinck reports at that time that the Deeper Life Bible Church not only has an attendance of 120,000 every Sunday, but has planted 500 churches in Lagos, 5,000 in the rest of Nigeria (with an independent estimate of more than 800,000 members in Nigeria alone), and 3,000 elsewhere (with missionaries to 40 countries of Africa) as the movement missionary contribution. Hugh Osgood, a dear friend of Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, it can be said that "where you find Pastor Kumuyi, look for Pastor Osgood, he is not far away". In the early 1990s, after a fruitful year as an Assemblies of God pastor, Hugh set up Cornerstone Christian Centre, where he is still Senior Minister. This ‘resource centre church’ pioneered a TV department (later CPS Ltd), the staff of which established GOD TV and Revelation TV. Hugh continues to provide programming for both the UK and overseas. Hugh’s leadership of Cornerstone has also overseen the birth of a number of social action projects, including the Welcome Centre for Refugees, and a pre-school in north Bromley.
While most budding songwriters dream of their first composition becoming a global success, it usually remains a dream. For Dave Bilbrough, 'Abba Father' became a giant step into international music-writing recognition. Now, after over two decades in full-time Christian ministry and numerous albums later, he is recognised as one of Britain's foremost worship leaders and songwriters.
With a wide appeal that spans all Christian denominations and networks, songs such as 'All hail the Lamb', 'I am a new creation', 'Sound the trumpet', 'How wonderful' and 'Let there be love' have become a staple part of many a church's repertoire. Drawing on folk roots and world music influences, Dave is in demand as troubadour and worship leader. His ministry brings an emphasis on the grace and faithfulness of God, uninhibited praise and reconciliation. As well as leading celebrations all across the UK, Dave's travels have taken him to the USA, throughout Europe, Malaysia, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Singapore, India, Kenya, and Australia. Dave has made several appearances on national TV and radio.
